A photo suspected to be a group photo of Li Keqiang and Zhang Honghai

The old photo above is a group photo taken in 1981 by some cadres of the Peking University Youth League Committee and Student Union in Shidu, Fangshan District, Beijing. The person in the middle of the last row wearing a hat is Zhang Honghai. The boy in white next to him on the left was a student in the 1977 class of the Law Department. Can you tell who he is today?

The original author did not explicitly state whether the so-called 1977 class of the Law Department was actually Li Keqiang.

The 1977 class of the Peking University Law Department was the first group of students admitted to the Peking University Law Department after the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977. It consisted of 82 students and was hailed as the "first class of the Whampoa Military Academy" in the legal field. The class was divided into 8 groups, taught by more than 30 teachers including Ye Yuansheng and Gong Xiangrui. Lin Dongliang, Liu Hehai, and others served as class officers. Upon graduation in 1982, Li Keqiang, Guo Mingrui, and two others stayed on to teach at the university, while Tao Jingzhou, Wang Shaoguang, and others went abroad to study.

Many members of this class went on to work in government departments, the political and legal system, and universities after graduation: Li Keqiang served as Premier of the State Council; Chen Xingliang and Jiang Ming'an engaged in legal education at Peking University; He Qinhua served as President of East China University of Political Science and Law; Guo Mingrui promoted the development of the law discipline at Yantai University; and Su Chi served as Vice President of the Beijing First Intermediate People's Court. The class held a 20th-anniversary reunion in 2002 and compiled a commemorative album, "The Unnamed 77."

Chinese Name

Peking University Law Department Class of '77

Also known as

The "First Whampoa Military Academy" of the legal profession

Historical Background
The Peking University Law Department Class of '77 is possibly the largest class in Chinese university history: it had 82 students. More than 30 of them served as class advisors, counselors, or lecturers. Among them were Ye Yuansheng, Sun Guohua, Sha Jiansun, Zhu Qichao, Yang Dunxian, Liu Jiaxing, Wang Guoshu, Luo Xiangwen, Wang Yongfei, Yang Zixuan, Wang Deyi, Shen Zongling, Gong Xiangrui, Zhang Guohua, Li Zhimin, and others.

The 82 students were divided into 8 groups. Among them were Lin Yicui, who served as the class branch secretary for four years (because her name sounded too feminine and inconvenient for accompanying leaders on business trips, she later changed her name to "Lin Dongliang," meaning "pillar of the nation," at the leaders' request); class monitor Liu Hehai (who already had three sons when he came to study; another classmate with three sons was Feng Dianmei); academic representative Fu Changlu; life representative Zhao Guoling; and Xie Simin, Xie Weixian, Liu Fengming, Tao Jingzhou, Du Chun, Zhao Rukun, Li Honghai, Xu Jie, Chen Xingliang, Gu Gongyun, Gu Xueting, Cong Peiguo, Jiang Ming'an, Li Keqiang, Lan Xiaomei, Liu Dequan, Yuan Sailu, Zhang Hengshan, Li Huayun, Niu Jia, Qiu Zhengyuan, Wang Zhiyong, Li Junling and his wife, Song Jian, Yan Ye, Zhai Jianping, Su Yan, Wang Yan, and others.

They graduated in 1982. Besides Li Keqiang, Guo Mingrui, Jiang Ming'an, and Wu Shuchen, who stayed at the university, Tao Jingzhou, Wang Shaoguang, and Liu Fengming went abroad to study.

In 2002, the Peking University Law Department Class of '77 held a reunion to commemorate their 20th graduation anniversary. Most of the classmates attended, and their former teachers were also invited. Li Keqiang spoke as a student representative. After the reunion, the classmates who organized the event compiled a commemorative album containing photos of each classmate during their time at the university and now. The album was titled "The Unnamed '77."

Alumni Development: Of the 82 alumni from the Peking University Law Department Class of '77, some entered government departments, some entered the political and legal system, some became lawyers, CEOs of large companies, or legal advisors, while many more taught on university campuses. Several others took up administrative positions in universities. Zhou Zhenxiang, the only classmate who has passed away, was the vice president of the China Youth University for Political Sciences. He died of liver cancer on March 2, 2004, at the age of 46.
